Last June, Suzuki announced plans for an Indonesian factory, capable of producing 100,000 engines annually. Wednesday, it will go ahead and build that engine plant, its third factory in the country. Production on those lines could even be raised as high as 150,000 vehicles a year.
"Suzuki Motor Corp plans to invest nearly $800 million to expand its automobile-production facilities in Indonesia over the next two years," Soebronto Laras, the president of Jakarta-based PT Suzuki Indomobil Motor, told The Wall Street Journal.1
Suzuki already produces 80,000 four-wheel vehicles a year in Indonesia, and they hope to increase it to 120,000. Suzuki will add a seven-seater minivan to its plans as well.
Head of Suzuki's local affiliate, Soebronto, also said the auto maker plans to produce a new subcompact with a 1.2-liter engine. "It is still at a very early stage," he said. "It will be a new generation small, five-seater eco-friendly car."2
